I like this litter box, but now I realize I’ve got enough room, I’m going back to the large Booda Dome Cleanstep Cat Box that I used to own. See, I bought this one because we moved to a new apartment. The Booda Dome, which had served me well, despite being somewhat awkward to clean due to its rounded design, was far too big to take on a road trip and for the new bathroom… or at least that’s what I thought until I finally got here and saw the floor-space that was really available.

But anyway, the Cat-It was great for the road trip because the top comes off and fits into the bottom (it stacks), so it fit nicely in the trunk of my car, and in my apartment currently it definitely has the following pros:

    1) The pan is deep which is great for big kitties like mine.

    2) It’s easy to keep clean with a straightforward design.

    3) It has a latched door (if your cats are OK with that).

There aren’t too many cons except:

    1) The locking latches work OK, but feel a bit flimsy.

    2) The large opening means kitty can still flick the litter (and anything else) outside.

    3) A big step up means kitty likes to leap out and track litter everywhere.

So, I guess I quickly discovered my kitties don’t like doors on litter boxes, and who can blame them? I quickly removed that. It was quite a thick piece of plastic too with little bobbles on it which I really think meant the guys couldn’t see inside well. I know it was there to help aid with odor control, but they didn’t like the door at all. The Booda Dome gives them the ability to be covered up, but is always ‘open,’ plus there’s more space to maneuver, but won’t stop stinky smells unfortunately. However, keeping the box clean and the kind of litter you use can make more of a difference in this respect too, as most cat owners are probably aware.

The Cat-It takes up a small amount of floor space and is portable, I do like its depth, and it’s still bigger than many other cat boxes out there, but now I’ve got the room again I’m going for something bigger. This one will, however, remain with me as it’ll be great for any future trips… I just wouldn’t go for a litter box with any kind of swinging door again as that’s definitely more for us than it is for kitty… and they’ll make sure you know it!

If this is the correct product (there is no picture or detailed description) this is the product I am reviewing: 50695 Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Pan, Warm Gray 22″ x 19. 7″ x 18.5″. I found this box yesterday and *finally* there is a large enough hooded litter box so your cat can turn around and stand up comfortably. I leave the fold-away door folded up on top, so it is like having a moonroof for the box. I do not use a hooded box to “contain odor” since my acts are few a raw meat diet there is no litter box odor. However they like to fling litter around and one likes to urinate standing up so sometimes goes over the edge of the box in open designs. I used to use rubbermaid totes with a hole cut in them, but the uneven bottoms with grooved (not deigned for the purpose) are so difficult to clean I have to replace these often. This box appears to be a solution to my problem!

    Pros:

    - large enough including width so your cat can turn around, dig and stand up without feeling constrained.

    - nice smooth finish and rounded corners is less likely to get litter stuck to it

    - hood fits tight with the bottom so if urine hits it there is no leak

    - locks keep the top on tight

    - door can be folded up and away to create a moonroof, for your tall cat to stick his head up

    - bag lock feature helps cleaning, you can hook a bag over the doorway tab and scoop litter in without spilling

    Cons:

    - come people will use the attached door in the down position, which I consider unfair and uncomfortable for cats, to be enclosed ina small space while they do their business. Better to remove the door altogether or keep it folded up.
