I bought this carrier about six months ago, so I’ve had some time to see the pros and cons. Great carrier if your pet is a reluctant traveler because the 3rd door saves you some time. However, like the other reviews mention, the handle is poorly designed and the wire lid will bend with repeated use just opening the door. I’ve managed to work around the crappy handle issue by using a shoulder strap (I use the one off of an old lap top bag) and the handle is just to stablize the carrier while walking or etc. If you just use the handle the wire door will bend and/or pop open. As far as bending the door while opening it…I haven’t bent mine yet but the first couple of times using it I almost did. Just use an even amount of pressure on the wires while you’re unlatching (using both hands…so have the door opened before you have your pet in your arms). If anyone from Marchioro reads this stuff, change the placement of the handle (maybe a design similar to one of a tote on the plastic part, avoiding the door completely, and use a stronger metal for the wire or redo the latches.

My cat hates carriers. Aside from the obvious of being confined, putting him through an opening face first that looks small freaks him out and I would always have to put him in tail first so he didn’t see it coming. I bought this carrier because it has a door on top which makes putting a large cat into much easier. He’s less apt to fight and get nervous. And the fact the top portion is open to him it doesn’t seem so confining as the single side door carriers. I definitely recommend this type of carrier for all owners in reducing pet stress when it’s time to take a trip. Whether short or long.

In reading the customer reviews on this product I had some concerns that it would be very difficult to assemble since they only had pictures and not written instructions to help you. There was absolutely no difficulty in assembling this carrier–you just have to think though what you are attempting to do with each step. It took less than 15 minutes to assemble.

(For those who do read instructions) here are HINTS in assembling the carrier:

    1) the two black holders for the handle are PUSHED UP THROUGH THE WIRE GRILL TOP FROM UNDERNEATHE THE METAL GRILL–push each firmly until it locks in place. The ends of the holders that are closed off will be to the outside of the carrier.

    2) insert the tabs on the handle into the holders.

    3) put the legs of the left side of the door (both top and bottom) in place BEFORE you begin attaching the top to the bottom. (You will not be able to put the door on if the kennel top is already attached to the bottom.)

    4) the funny looking black plastic piece contains the (five) pivots you will attach so that you can latch the top to the bottom. Simply break each off from the plastic piece. (Each looks like a very small eyeglasses frame without glass or side pieces.)

    5) remember, each of the five latches (2 on each side and 1 at the back) will pivot up from the outside and then swing free in opening the latch to separate the top from the bottom of the carrier.

    6) Attach one of the pivots to the bottom edge of a latch–push firmly until it clicks in place.

    7) from underneathe, firmly push the free end of the pivot into the opening for the latch. When it is attached correctly you will be able to flip the latch up to open the latch and close it by pushing down until it snaps closed.

    8) the (2) hard plastic locks (pins) are inserted through small holes on each side of the door to secure the top to the bottom–push each through the hole and then turn the “handle” until it rests flush against the carrier wall.

    9) peel the backing from the LIVE ANIMALS LABEL and smooth onto the back of the carrier.

You have now finished putting the carrying kennel together.

HINT; If you want to remove the top metal grill in order to put a struggling animal inside, you have to squeeze the kennel’s sides until the latches holding it release and then do the same thing in reverse to put the top grill back on. I recommend you use the door to put the animal into the kennel and if the grill on top needs to be opened let the staff who will be working with the animal do it–they will have had experience doing it and it will be hard to do the first few times.

HINT; to prevent your pet from running every time you bring the carrying kennel out because it figures you are going to take it either to the vet, groomer or in the car—let the kennel be the pet’s sanctuary and special area all the time. Put the pet’s bed or towels in the bottom and he will learn he goes into the kennel, it’s his home and is always safe there.

HINT; when transporting your pet in the car, use your seat belt/shoulder harness to secure the kennel to the seat to prevent the kennel from flying if you are involved in an accident. It’s much safer to ALWAYS transport your pet in a carrier–safer for you and to prevent the animal from being thrown through the windshield in case of an accident.

This carrier meets requirements for pets traveling by air. I like having the metal grill so that the pet can see out the top and the owner can see the entire pet without disturbing it if it’s asleep. It’s well-made and very durable. It’s also very easy to clean or disinfect.

I have several different kinds of pet carriers and this is my favorite, by far. It’s the only one I will buy in the future and is the one I recommend to people who need a carrier for a cat or small dog. I hope this has been helpful to you in assembling your carrying kennel.

Very well made and sturdy. However, the assembly directions were pictures only and very difficult to understand. It was hard to figure out which piece they were referring to.

I’m very disappointed with this carrier. I can not use it for our 14 lb cat because the top door pops open when lifted by the handle. Then when you want to open the top door, you can’t because of the poor design of the catches. The top metal wires are all bent up from trying to pop the top open. Seemed like a good design, but I’m sorry I bought it.
